Food 4 Less E. coli Recall Part of JBS Swift Outbreak

The Kroger beef recall includes Kroger-owned Food 4 Less stores in the Chicago area, other parts of Illinois and parts of Indiana. The stores are recalling  store-packaged ground beef items because they may be associated with the JBS Swift E. coli outbreak.

istock_000001918139xsmall1According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the outbreak has sickened at least 23 people in nine states. Twelve of the victims were hospitalized and at least two suffered HUS, or hemolytic uremic syndrome, a type of kidney failure.

The CDC said Wisconsin and Michigan each have six confirmed illnesses. The other states affected by the outbreak are California, Minnesota, Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico and New York.

JBS Swift reportedly sold contaminated beef in whole cuts and some retailers used it to make store-packaged ground beef. The Greeley, Colorado, beef packer has recalled a total of 421,000 pounds of product.

Food 4 Less is owned by Kroger and has stores in other states. But a press release from Kroger said that only Food 4 Less stores in Illinois and Indiana were affected by the recall of tainted beef. The recall covers store-brand and store-packaged ground beef with sell-by dates from April 27 to June 1, 2009. These items include beef products in foam tray packages wrapped in clear cellophane with the following UPCs:

21165850000
21165860000
21165870000
21165880000
