Kroger Co. has issued a recall of select ground beef products that carry the store’s brands or were store-packaged. The company said the meat may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7 because it was made from beef supplied by JBS Swift Beef Co.
The company said the Kroger recall affects customers in the following areas: Greater Cincinnati, including Dayton; northern Kentucky; southeastern Indiana; Greater Memphis; Arkansas; Mississippi; Illinois and eastern Missouri.
The E. coli O157:H7 Kroger beef recall includes certain store-brand and store-packaged ground beef items with sell-by dates ranging from April 27 to June 1, 2009.
The company said some of the ground beef was sold at its Fry’s stores and Food 4 Less stores in Illinois and Indiana. A separate beef recall was announced for Kroger’s chain of Smith’s Food and Drug Stores. The Smith’s recall covers ball tip steak petite cuts, ground beef, cube steak, beef for fondue, beef fajita meat and beef for stir fry. The sell-by dates on Smith’s product are from May 5 to May 24, 2009.
