The multi-state outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 that has been linked to Ashville, N.Y.-based Fairbank Farms ground beef has now sickened at least 28 people in 12 states: California (1), Connecticut (4), Massachusetts (8), Maryland (1), Maine (2), Minnesota (1), New Hampshire (4), New Jersey (1), New York (1), Pennsylvania (2), South Dakota (2), and Vermont (1).
Sixteen people have been hospitalized and 3 developed hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), the primary cause of kidney failure in children. Two deaths have been reported, one in New Hampshire and one in New York.
