Family Files Lincoln Middle School E coli Lawsuit

ground-beef-ecoli-outbreakA second E. coli lawsuit has been filed against the Massachusetts meatpacker associated with the Lincoln Middle School E. coli outbreak that stemmed from a meal of hamburgers during a school trip to a nature camp in Plymouth, Massachusetts.

The second of the two E. coli O157:H7 lawsuits related to the Camp Bournedale outbreak was filed late last week in Plymouth Superior Court by the family of 11-year-0ld Lynn Santos of Lincoln, Rhode Island. The child fell severely ill as she was one of more than 30 students and chaperones from Lincoln Middle School who were sickened in the outbreak.

The family’s food poisoning lawsuit is against South Shore Meats Inc., the company that supplied fresh ground beef to Camp Bournedale. Molecular subtyping by public health investigators correlated E. coli O157:H7 in the camp’s leftover ground beef to the outbreak strain of E. coli found in victims. The investigation also prompted South Shore Meats to recall more than 1,000 pounds of its ground beef products sold in New England.

National food safety law firm Pritzker Olsen Attorneys has been in contact with victims of the Lincoln Middle School E. coli outbreak and currently represents victims of E. coli HUS, or hemolytic uremic syndrome, a life-threatening complication of infection from E. coli O157:H7 that is most prevalent in children.

Foodborne illness is a complicated legal specialty and families who have had a loved one sickened by ground beef contaminated by this pathogen have special rights.
