Huron E. coli Illness Investigation in Michigan

Public health officials in Huron County, Michigan, have announced a cluster of apparent E. coli 0157:H7 infections in at least five individuals.

Huron County Health Department issued a press release about the apparent E. coli outbreak, but did not identify what food or restaurant is implicated as the possible cause. However, the county’s press release did provide a warning that “some meat gets contaminated during the slaughtering process.” Eating meat that is rare or inadequately cooked is the most common way of getting the infection, the press release said.

The Huron Daily Tribune voiced disagreement over the county’s decision not to divulge the location where people have gotten sick.  “We feel this decision puts others in the area at risk. There may be people out there who have an E. coli infection, but because they lack information, they believe their illness is a typical stomachache,” the newspaper said.

The issue is important because E. coli can cause serious problems, such as kidney failure, central nervous system damage or even death.  People who are infected should seek medical care immediately and obtain a stool culture. For answers to legal questions, victims can call law firm PritzkerOlsen, P.A., a national food safety law firm. An E. coli lawyer at the firm can be reached at 1-888-377-8900 (TOLL FREE) or complete the contact form on the side of this Web page.

Our firm is one of the few in the country practicing extensively in the area of foodborne illness litigation and we have collected millions of dollars for victims of food poisoning. In addition to closely tracking public health investigations of outbreaks, PritzkerOlsen conducts its own probes into E. coli outbreaks.
