Biggest E. coli O157:H7 Ground Beef Recall of 2011

The largest E. coli ground beef recall of 2011 is from Commercial Meat Co. of Los Angeles, California. The establishment this week  is recalling about 377,775 pounds of ground beef products that may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7, a human pathogen that causes life-threatening hemoloytic uremic syndrome (HUS) in 5 to 15 percent of patients infected by it. So far, no illnesses have been associated with meat from the current recall.

According to a federal document review by national food safety law firm Pritzker Olsen Attorneys, Commercial Meat’s recall is larger than all other U.S. E. coli ground beef recalls combined for 2011. Altogether, six  meatpackers this year have recalled 666,827  pounds of ground beef products or cuts meant for grinding due to the presence of E. coli O157:H7 in tested samples.

Pritzker Olsen represents E. coli victims and their families all over the country. We have collected tens of millions of dollars for outbreak victims and our firm is one of the very few in the country practicing extensively in the area of  foodborne illness litigation. We provide free case consultations at 1-888-377-8900, or you can contact us online.

E. coli O157:H7 is banned from ground beef under federal law because of its threat to people. Children under 5 are especially vulnerable, but it can strike healthy people of any age. Of the six E. coli O157:H7 beef recalls announced this year by USDA, only one has been associated with illness. That recall, announced in late September by Tyson Fresh Meats, remains under investigation in connection with a ground beef E. coli outbreak in Butler County, Ohio.

Pride & Joy Raw Milk E. coli HUS Recall in WA

An HUS raw milk E. coli outbreak has triggered the recall of raw fluid milk produced by Pride & Joy Creamery, LLC of Granger, Washington, as state health and agriculture officials investigate. E. coli HUS, or hemolytic uremic syndrome, is a life-threatening complication of E. coli infection that causes kidney failure and can lead to other severe illness. Children under 5 years of age and older adults are most susceptible.

Pride & Joy Creamery unpasteurized milk under recall was sold at the farm in Granger and distributed through nine retail outlets (see below) in King, Pierce, Snohomish and Skagit counties, the Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) said in a news release. The raw milk recall was initiated after sampling discovered Escherichia Coli.

WSDA and other public health officials are exploring the possibility that there has been human illness linked to this milk.

A good raw milk HUS lawyer can help families recover from the hospitalization of a loved one by holding the purveyor accountable for selling food contaminated with pathogenic bacteria. E. coli is a well-known risk in the production and sale of raw milk and litigation is an appropriate response when individuals are sickened by it. Food poisoning attorneys at PritzkerOlsen, P.A., are nationally known with years of  experience in raw milk HUS lawsuits. They provide free case consultations at 1-888-377-8900 (Toll Free)  or will respond to contact information you provide.

E. coli symptoms include bloody diarrhea and stomach cramps.  Symptoms generally appear three to four days after exposure, but can take as long as nine days to appear. Anyone experiencing these symptoms should contact a health care provider. The infection sometimes causes hemolytic uremic syndrome, a serious disease in which red blood cells are fragmented and the kidneys fail.  Infants, children, pregnant women, the elderly and those with compromised immune systems are especially at risk. Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) is similar to HUS and also can result from E. coli infection.

Cincinnati, Ohio E. coli O157:H7 Illnesses Linked to J.B. Meats Ground Beef and Hamburger Patties

After Cincinnati, Ohio health officials found a possible link between two cases of E. coli O157:H7 and hamburgers processed by J.B. Meats and served at area restaurants, the company recalled about 72,800 pounds of ground beef and hamburger patties due to possible contamination with E. coli O157:H7.  The products subject to the J.B. Meats recall are 5 and 10 pound clear packages of ground beef and ground beef patties in various size packages that were processed on and can be identified by the dates Aug. 18, 2010 through Aug. 18, 2011. J.B. Meats is a Cincinnati, Ohio establishment.

The recalled ground beef and hamburger patties were sold to restaurants in the Cincinnati area, but the company did not say which restaurants. Each clear plastic bag and label bear the establishment number “EST. 1188” within the Ohio Department of Agriculture’s mark of inspection.

J.B. Meats said it was notified on Aug. 12 of an investigation of two E. coli O157:H7 illnesses. The Cincinnati Health Department reported there were two patients who became ill on July 20 and 21 that may have resulted from ground beef consumed on July 16 and 17, the company said.

Epidemiological and microbiological evidence points to a possible link between the ground beef products produced by J.B. Meats on July 15 and the illnesses in Cincinnati, Ohio. The company said the recall is precautionary, as there has been no conclusive link between the illnesses and the ground beef produced at the facility.

E. coli O157 can cause hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) and thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP), both severe illnesses that can cause kidney failure, central nervous system damage (seizures, stroke, paralysis, etc.), heart failure, pancreatitis and death.
