The largest E. coli ground beef recall of 2011 is from Commercial Meat Co. of Los Angeles, California. The establishment this week is recalling about 377,775 pounds of ground beef products that may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7, a human pathogen that causes life-threatening hemoloytic uremic syndrome (HUS) in 5 to 15 percent of patients infected by it. So far, no illnesses have been associated with meat from the current recall.

According to a federal document review by national food safety law firm Pritzker Olsen Attorneys, Commercial Meat’s recall is larger than all other U.S. E. coli ground beef recalls combined for 2011. Altogether, six meatpackers this year have recalled 666,827 pounds of ground beef products or cuts meant for grinding due to the presence of E. coli O157:H7 in tested samples.

Pritzker Olsen represents E. coli victims and their families all over the country. We have collected tens of millions of dollars for outbreak victims and our firm is one of the very few in the country practicing extensively in the area of foodborne illness litigation. We provide free case consultations at 1-888-377-8900, or you can contact us online.

E. coli O157:H7 is banned from ground beef under federal law because of its threat to people. Children under 5 are especially vulnerable, but it can strike healthy people of any age. Of the six E. coli O157:H7 beef recalls announced this year by USDA, only one has been associated with illness. That recall, announced in late September by Tyson Fresh Meats, remains under investigation in connection with a ground beef E. coli outbreak in Butler County, Ohio.

See below for a reference guide to all six of the recalls:

Children under 5 years of age and older adults are most susceptible.

Pride & Joy Creamery unpasteurized milk under recall was sold at the farm in Granger and distributed through nine retail outlets (see below) in King, Pierce, Snohomish and Skagit counties, the Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) said in a news release. The raw milk recall was initiated after sampling discovered Escherichia Coli.

WSDA and other public health officials are exploring the possibility that there has been human illness linked to this milk.

A good raw milk HUS lawyer can help families recover from the hospitalization of a loved one by holding the purveyor accountable for selling food contaminated with pathogenic bacteria. E. coli is a well-known risk in the production and sale of raw milk and litigation is an appropriate response when individuals are sickened by it. Food poisoning attorneys at PritzkerOlsen, P.A., are nationally known with years of experience in raw milk HUS lawsuits. They provide free case consultations at 1-888-377-8900 (Toll Free) or will respond to contact information you provide.

E. coli symptoms include bloody diarrhea and stomach cramps. Symptoms generally appear three to four days after exposure, but can take as long as nine days to appear. Anyone experiencing these symptoms should contact a health care provider. The infection sometimes causes hemolytic uremic syndrome, a serious disease in which red blood cells are fragmented and the kidneys fail. Infants, children, pregnant women, the elderly and those with compromised immune systems are especially at risk. Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) is similar to HUS and also can result from E. coli infection.

Pride & Joy Raw Cow’s Milk bearing expiration dates of 9/30/2011 and 9/31/11 has been recalled. The milk is sold only in gallon, half gallon and quart containers. Recalled raw milk was sold from the on-farm store at 2145 Liberty Road in Granger, WA and from the following locations:

After Cincinnati, Ohio health officials found a possible link between two cases of E. coli O157:H7 and hamburgers processed by J.B. Meats and served at area restaurants, the company recalled about 72,800 pounds of ground beef and hamburger patties due to possible contamination with E. coli O157:H7. The products subject to the J.B. Meats recall are 5 and 10 pound clear packages of ground beef and ground beef patties in various size packages that were processed on and can be identified by the dates Aug. 18, 2010 through Aug. 18, 2011. J.B. Meats is a Cincinnati, Ohio establishment.

The recalled ground beef and hamburger patties were sold to restaurants in the Cincinnati area, but the company did not say which restaurants. Each clear plastic bag and label bear the establishment number “EST. 1188” within the Ohio Department of Agriculture’s mark of inspection.

J.B. Meats said it was notified on Aug. 12 of an investigation of two E. coli O157:H7 illnesses. The Cincinnati Health Department reported there were two patients who became ill on July 20 and 21 that may have resulted from ground beef consumed on July 16 and 17, the company said.

Epidemiological and microbiological evidence points to a possible link between the ground beef products produced by J.B. Meats on July 15 and the illnesses in Cincinnati, Ohio. The company said the recall is precautionary, as there has been no conclusive link between the illnesses and the ground beef produced at the facility.

E. coli O157 can cause hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) and thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP), both severe illnesses that can cause kidney failure, central nervous system damage (seizures, stroke, paralysis, etc.), heart failure, pancreatitis and death.

The recall was prompted by an outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 linked to the bologna that has sickened at least 14 people in 5 states: Maryland (3 cases), New Jersey (2 cases), North Carolina (1 case), Ohio (2 cases) and Pennsylvania (6 cases).

Below is the Seltzer’s bologna recall retail distribution list

New Jersey – NJ

Note from the FSIS regarding this retail distribution list: “FSIS has reason to believe that the above retail location(s) received various sizes of Seltzer’s Beef Lebanon Bologna that have been recalled by Palmyra Bologna Company, Inc.

The Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS) is the food safety arm of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. After years of urging the FSIS to post a list of retailers along with a recall announcement, it finally does, but sometimes the lists are not published for several days after a recall announcement or not at all.

I just looked, and FSIS has still not published a list of retailers that sold recalled Seltzer’s Lebanon bologna. Palmyra Bologna Company, a Pennsylvania firm, announced the recall of Lebanon bologna on March 22 after health investigators found an epidemiological link to the bologna and cases of E. coli O157:H7. To date, there are 14 people with lab-confirmed cases from 5 states: Maryland (3 cases), New Jersey (2 cases), North Carolina (1 case), Ohio (2 cases) and Pennsylvania (6 cases).

The reported dates of illness onset for these 14 people range from January 10, 2011 to February 15, 2011, according to the CDC. State and federal health officials have been investigating this outbreak for weeks. Certainly, Palmyra has known for some time that their product was suspect and that a recall might be necessary. Palmyra, if they have not already done so, should get a list of retailers to the FSIS. And, FSIS, publish it. Consumers deserve to know.

The investigation into the Lebanon bologna E coli outbreak has found an epidemiological link between certain Seltzer’s Lebanon bologna products and 14 cases of E. coli O157:H7 in Maryland (3 cases), New Jersey (2 cases), North Carolina (1 case), Ohio (2 cases) and Pennsylvania (6 cases). The Seltzer’s bologna products are made by Palmyra Bologna Company, Inc. of Palmyra Pennsylvania. Lebanon bologna is a beef product. E. coli O157 is found in the intestines of beef cattle.

In an epidemiology study conducted during March 15-18, a total of 13 ill persons answered questions about foods consumed during the days before becoming ill, and investigators compared their responses to those of 21 persons of similar age previously reported to state health departments with other illnesses (“controls”). Ill persons (69%) were significantly more likely than controls (0%) to report eating Lebanon bologna. Additionally, four ill persons have been identified who purchased Seltzer Brand Lebanon bologna at four different grocery store locations in three states before becoming ill. An epidemiological link can be enough for E. coli victims to sue for compensation for medical expenses, pain and suffering, lost wages and other damages. Contact our E. coli attorneys regarding a Palmyra bologna lawsuit.

Post written by Attorney Fred Pritzker

I am calling on Palmyra Bologna Company, Inc., maker of Seltzer’s Lebanon bologna products, to pay medical expenses and other costs incurred by victims of a multistate E. coli O157:H7 outbreak in Maryland, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio and Pennsylvania. To date, 14 people have confirmed cases of the outbreak strain of E. coli 0157:H7.

Palmyra Bologna Company should immediately pay for hospitalization and other direct costs to alleviate the victim’s financial burden while related legal issues, including pain and suffering, are pending. The families deserve that peace of mind. I and my team of attorneys represent food poisoning victims throughout the United States. Our mission is to help E. coli victims get on with the rest of their lives by obtaining justice, fair compensation, and holding accountable those who caused them harm. We have helped food poisoning victims and their families in New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio and Pennsylvania.

Many of my clients developed hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) and thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP). These severe illnesses can cause kidney failure, stroke, blindness, heart failure, pancreatitis and death.

An epidemiological investigation has determined that there is a link between certain Seltzer’s Lebanon bologna products and the cases of E. coli O157:H7. In response to this outbreak, Palmyra Bologna Company, Inc., a Palmyra, Pennsylvania establishment, issued a bologna recall on 23,000 pounds of Lebanon bologna the company had sent to distribution centers in California, Colorado, Maryland, New York and Pennsylvania for further distribution to retail stores. The recalled bologna was sold in packages labeled “SELTZER’S BEEF LEBANON BOLOGNA.” The recall was announced on March 22, 2011. The recall does not involve any Seltzer’s Lebanon bologna product produced since December 31, 2010.

E. coli lawyers at PritzkerOlsen, P.A., are monitoring this Seltzer’s bologna E. coli outbreak and have established a claims center for members of the public who have been harmed. For a free case consultation, call 1-888-377-8900 (Toll Free) or complete our free consultation form. Our firm is one of the few in the country practicing extensively in the area of foodborne illness litigation and we have recovered millions of dollars for victims of food poisoning.

We currently represent E. coli HUS victims and have years of experience representing victims of food poisoning against large national retailers and food manufacturers.
