Bakersfield California Outbreak

Health officials in Bakersfield, California are looking for the source of an E. coli outbreak that has sickened 12 people, 11 of them children. What is particularly worrying is that 4 of the children have been hospitalized with complications asociated with E. coli O157:H7 infections, including hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). HUS is the leading source of kidney failure among children in the U.S.

Update: Health officials have determined that a backyard water slide party was where most of the children became infected. It is still unknown how the first child became infected before spreading the bacteria.
