Wisconsin Piggly Wiggly Ground Beef Recall

dna-fingerprinting-pfge.jpgTwo people contracted confirmed cases of E. coli O157:H7 after eating ground beef purchased at Piggly Wiggly stores in Monroe and Sister Bay, Wisconsin. The PFGE patterns (genetic fingerprints) of the E. coli involved in the two cases match, meaning a common source caused both cases of E. coli.

ground-beef-ecoli2.jpgIn response to this finding, the owner of the stores, Fresh Brands Distributing Inc., announced a recall of certain ground beef sold at its Wisconsin-based Piggly Wiggly stores. The ground beef affected by the recall includes “"ground chuck" and "certified angus beef ground round 85 percent lean," with sell-by dates from July 15 through August 5, 2007.

Given the sell-by dates, if consumers still have any of the recalled ground beef, it is most likely in the freezer. Freezing does not kill E. coli bacteria; therefore, if you have any of the recalled ground beef in your freezer and no one has eaten any of it in the last 10 days, dispose of it. If not, wait for 10 days from the time it was eaten, and then dispose of it.

If you have been diagnosed with E. coli after eating ground beef sold at a Piggly Wiggly store owned by Fresh Brands Distributing, you may be entitled to compensation for your medical expenses, pain and suffering, lost earnings, emotional distress, and other damages.
