The Kroger beef recall includes Kroger-owned Food 4 Less stores in the Chicago area, other parts of Illinois and parts of Indiana. The stores are recalling store-packaged ground beef items because they may be associated with the JBS Swift E. coli outbreak.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the outbreak has sickened at least 23 people in nine states. Twelve of the victims were hospitalized and at least two suffered HUS, or hemolytic uremic syndrome, a type of kidney failure.

The CDC said Wisconsin and Michigan each have six confirmed illnesses. The other states affected by the outbreak are California, Minnesota, Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico and New York.

JBS Swift reportedly sold contaminated beef in whole cuts and some retailers used it to make store-packaged ground beef. The Greeley, Colorado, beef packer has recalled a total of 421,000 pounds of product.

Food 4 Less is owned by Kroger and has stores in other states. But a press release from Kroger said that only Food 4 Less stores in Illinois and Indiana were affected by the recall of tainted beef. The recall covers store-brand and store-packaged ground beef with sell-by dates from April 27 to June 1, 2009. These items include beef products in foam tray packages wrapped in clear cellophane with the following UPCs:

21165850000
21165860000
21165870000
21165880000

If you or someone you love has suffered an E. coli O157:H7 infection or HUS after eating beef that may have come from Food 4 Less or JBS Swift, contact an E. coli attorney at Pritzker Olsen Attorneys. Pritzker Olsen has filed a Kroger lawsuit on behalf of an E. coli victim who was infected in a 2008 recall of tainted meat from Kroger. JBS issued a recall last week saying thousands of pounds of beef products that it made could be contaminated with the pathogen.

The recalls are associated with an outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 that has sickened 18 to 24 people. The recall by Smith’s Food and Drug Stores coincided with a Kroger recall announcement by parent Kroger Co. that covered certain trayed ground beef products sold in Kroger, Fry’s Stores, Food 4 Less stores in Indiana and Illinois and Smith’s.

The recalled Smith’s items have sell-by dates ranging from May 5 to May 24, 2009. Among the locations are 48 stores in Utah. Other states include Nevada, New Mexico, Arizona, Montana, Idaho and Wyoming.

The Smith’s recall covers ball tip steak petite cuts, ground beef, cube steak, beef for fondue, beef fajita meat and beef for stir fry. For a listing of UPC codes, click here.

National food safety law firm Pritzker Olsen Attorneys has filed a Kroger E. coli lawsuit against Kroger on behalf of a victim of a 2008 E. coli O157:H7 outbreak, also related to contaminated beef. The firm is accepting clients nationwide from the current outbreak and has the experience, resources and skills to conduct its own investigation into what went wrong.

Pritzker Olsen has obtained tens of millions of dollars for victims of food poisoning. For many years, it has been among a select few law firms that have practiced extensively in the area of foodborne illness litigation.
